Don’t forget to look up! Details above the sight line.

Three pet peeves. Ok, I have a few more but how about just three tonight? A client of mine had remarked today she saw a house on the MLS that she thought maybe I had done…she loved the modern look. Flattered but unsure what house she might be describing, I sat down and searched in the MLS over 500K.  Didn’t find the house but did find a big headache and a few pet peeves. I am wondering who designed these features, floorplans and faux pas’.? What do you think? Still like plant shelves?

Ready or not! Here they come! Are college grads ready for LIFE?

As part of the # let’s blog off round up today, I am writing about the topic of “Are college graduates ready for real life” with the slant of  an employer of  20 somethings and have had plenty try to make it through “Cheryl boot camp”. I also am of the Gen X age  and many of my friends now have kids that are recent grads. It is not easy to work in the design/construction industry and it is not easy to work for me ( gasp!)! I have expectations.

Don’t let your crown “kiss” your baffle..and other great lighting tips for kitchen design!

Egads! I have been called on the carpet by a couple of readers to give it up on my “rules” for lighting a space well…specifically kitchens. So, okay! I am guilty of pointing out the bad and the good without some follow up substance. I will wager many designers have different opinions on a few of these tips but  I swear by my “rules” because time after time, we end up with not just a well lit space but one that can be “dressed” differently with the lighting to fit many moods. I.E. serious cooking, entertaining, craft time with the kids, late night snack with hubby and so on.  I think often lighting is poorly done because no one thinks so much about it at the outset of planning( I used to be guilty of this too!) and then when budgets get tight, it is the first thing that seems to go. But if you do not have the proper lighting in a kitchen, you are simply killing your design.

Have to share new master bath!

Have been a bit out of pocket. Business has been good lately ( thank you oh Gods of designers!) and have also been playing a bit more tennis….after the urging of several friends who keep blathering on about this balance thing???? Like, writing on your blog at 1am is not balanced??? Or, waking up to sketch an island idea for an out of town client is not balanced?? Poooshaw. So, anyway, tennis is good…thanks for asking but does take up two mornings a week. And, let’s face it…doing a little networking on the courts too…many of my opponents and teammates are former clients or could be future ones!

A great before and after kitchen! More to come!

I am  back in the saddle of writing on the blog! We have been busy launching a new part of our business….handling furnishings and window treatments! This is a natural segue for us now and have hired a wonderful gal to head this area up for us. We are excited about this new venture and am sure will end up posting good info on here as we get more involved! In the meantime, am back at writing about kitchens and baths and lots of things in between! Comments always welcome!
